Record Store Day Drops 2020

If you’re a music enthusiast or vinyl collector myself, you know that Record Store Day is an exciting and special day. Finding exclusive releases of albums that have never been released before is something exciting to add to anyone’s record collection. While there are a ton of live records, there are still plenty of interesting releases, and 2020 had an amazing list of releases. However, there was one thing that set 2020 apart from other years: they split Record Store Day into three separate days. They had Record Store Day Drop 1, 2 and 3. Even though it was split into three days, there were some good things that came out of it, as well as bad things. Let’s break down some of the pros and cons from the three separate days.

Positives (+)

• The thing that I enjoyed the most is that I could split my spending over the three different drops. While I could afford to buy all of the records on my list that first day, there’s a little bit of pain when I have to drop over $30 on anything that isn’t rent or groceries. Splitting the releases over the three days probably encouraged other people to spend more money overall. It has also encouraged me to buy a few more albums that weren’t on my original list.
• Since each day had a different ‘vibe’, it tried to cut down the amount of people at each release. While this was a good idea in theory, it didn’t necessarily work out as intended. I will go into this more in depth on the negatives side.

Negatives (-)

• As I said before, each drop had a different ‘vibe’, however, it didn’t work out too well. The first record store day drop, there were a ton of people at my local record store. They were lined up all along the building and I was actually a bit scared that I wouldn’t get all of my records, even though I was there 15 minutes before opening. The second and third drop? There was no one. I’m exaggerating when I say there was no one, but there was no long line that was looping outside. They shouldn’t have shoved all of their amazing albums on the first day if they truly wanted people to be socially distanced.
• Since there were three different days, it’s easier to forget the extra dates of one of those days. I literally remembered the third drop a few days before the actual drop. Luckily I didn’t forget to go, but I can see how some people might forget about one of the drops, especially with them being one month apart.
